App design
Pool Data is a startup focused on the world of personal data after the end of the cookie. They wanted to offer users of their Marketplace a wallet app with the added functionality of allowing the user to collect their personal data into one place and choose to share all, or part of it, with Data Unions of their choice.
The brief
The Problem
When it comes to data people are left in the dark.
Who has my data?
How is it being used?
How can I control it?
How can I earn from it?
The solution
The ownership and portability of personal data.
Help Data Unions connect with and pay out to union members.
Allow users to easily stop sharing their data.
Show people the power and reach of their data.
The objective
To build a wallet application and browser extension allowing
everyday citizens to view, control and share their data in
return for a cut of the profits their data helps generate.
Workshop on key user stories in Miro
My Role
My responsibilities included leading a small team of designers, a UX designer and a developer. I lead daily standups, ran workshops for stakeholders, created prototypes and presented them to investors and internally. I conducted user research interviews, created journey maps and blueprints, identified user pain points and opportunities to engage the user. I designed the UI and worked closely in an agile format with the developer to build an app store ready iOS app

The Context
We began with a discovery phase, looking at the competitive landscape and creating a series of workshops seeking answers to key questions. What existed already? Who was doing anything similar? What was working? What wasn’t? and most importantly, who was our potential audience?
We established a set of key personas, which were mapped into user stories and brought together an initial MVP feature list based on user requirements.

The Approach
Our first priority was to work out how our wallet would work from a technical point of view. We held brainstorming sessions and produced quick turn around scamps so we could run through various scenarios with the tech team.
Next we designed and produced a prototype which I presented to key stakeholders, Investors and potential Data Union customers. Their feedback allowed us to evolve the offering and respond quickly to feedback.

The way we work
Once the MVP features and wireframes were presented and signed off by the wider team, myself and a developer spent two intensive weeks building a working app for both iOS and Android in React Native which was ready to launch in the App store should they wish. This really helped move the conversation faster around what the user experience and features should be. It was used as a powerful demo internally and as an early working proof of concept to show investors.

The System
Once the MVP was shipped we started to build a design system of components which were built out in Storybook. With a broader range of features to explore, we began to work in Jira, splitting out features into cards and increasing the team size. We also started to pivot the idea in response to investor and user feedback.

The Solution
The final product allowed the team to download a working app onto their phone to showcase to potential investors and use as a funding tool.
Our product met our high level goals
- Sign up easily
- Browse and join Data Unions
- Send and receive funds
Solution One
Sign in securely and effortlessly
User can sign up easily. We wanted to ensure we are trusted and secure but also not be offputting. We created a frictionless signup process.
Solution Two
Send and receive funds
The user can view transactions, sort lists, search, transfer funds to other users and convert crypto into to fiat currency.
Solution Three
Browse and join Data Unions
The user can find new Data Unions to join, see which unions they are a member of. They can sign up easily and most importantly, they can stop sharing at the click of a button and control what they share and what their data is used for.
The Result
Pocket secured valuable funding by lunching its MVP and has began its next phase of feature development, pivoting in response to investor and user feedback. This involves exploring the metrics, insights and sign on solutions that Pocket could offer.
